The Learning Club
As we worked with students over the years, we have become more and more aware that growing up is a tough process. Many of our students struggle with self-esteem, organization, making friends, time management and planning for their future. As a result, we have designed a special curriculum that helps students in these areas as well as many others. The Learning Club is a weekly one hour meeting that provides students with information about different important social and life skills they need to develop into confident, successful adults. Each week, the students will participate in a discussion led by one of our Creative Approach Development Center instructors or a guest speaker. They will then learn and practice important teamwork skills as work through an activity or play a game.
To help students continue to use their new skills throughout the week, they will be provided with a variety of resources to serve as reminders. Parents will receive detailed newsletters, handouts and calendars to stay informed about what their children are learning and tips on how they can help.
Areas of focus include:
- Effective communication
- Coping with stress
- Dealing with frustrations and anger
- Making friends
- Being a leader
- Health & safety
- Future planning
- Getting organized
- Time management
- Citizenship and being a valued member of the community
Students that sign up will be provided with an assessment to provide us with baseline information about their skill level. As they work each week, their skill development will be tracked to show growth and progress.
