The Leadership Academy
Make sure your voice is heard & be a part of change!
Did you know every state has committees, councils, and boards focused on issues related to education, transportation, medicine, the justice system, commerce, and more? These groups provide state leaders with valuable information (such as the quality of roads, the effectiveness of school programs, the need for additional resources for the elderly or people with disabilities, etc.) that helps them make decisions about the development of new programs and resources and how much funding will go to each issue when the budgeting plans are made. The groups are made up of a mixture of state experts, professionals, and other community stakeholders to make sure feedback and concerns are shared and included from the general public, there are spots in each group for people like you. Schools, businesses, and organizations such as local museums and community groups often have these councils and advisory groups as well all with the purpose of receiving guidance to help decide the goals and mission for the upcoming year.
It is wonderful to know that decisions are not just being made without the input of the public because these are the issues that affect us daily. But there is still a big problem, the majority of the general public does not know about these opportunities, and those that do often explain they do not participate because they feel too out of place or unprepared. This has led to a lack of diverse input and ideas being shared which can cause groups that you represent (culture, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, demographic, disability, socioeconomic status, religion, etc.) to be left out of the discussion because no one else in the group has that background and does not think about how that specific group will be affected by changes or how current conditions are affecting them. For example, in a council dedicated to transportation, if there are no members who use a wheelchair, have mobility challenges, or are connected to those who are in that population, challenges related to navigating a city or community in a wheelchair or with limited mobility may not be easily recognized therefore making getting around difficult. Your background, personal experiences, creativity, and most importantly, voice are needed to help make our communities diverse and inclusive.
To help those who would like to be in a leadership position like this, Creative Approach Development Center is excited to launch The Leadership Academy.
